Engineer Tomas Perez, the maintenance manager for Five Star’s entire fleet, has worked for the company since 1989. “We’ve been using different brands of engine oils, and I noticed that at around 350,000 kilometers (217,500 miles), we did overhauls for our engines,” Perez said. “Now we’re using Delo® 400 with ISOSYN® Technology and we’re able to extend our engine life to 1,600,000 kilometers.”
Recently, the company tore down one of several Nissan UD PE6-T diesel engines running past 1.6 million kilometers (approximately 1 million miles), of service using Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 engine oil. The condition of the engine made it clear that switching to Delo was the right choice. Starting with the pistons, Perez examined each part of the engine and found it clear of sludge and carbon deposits, despite its many years of service. Each ring on the engine’s pistons stayed free with their lands remaining clean, showing the excellent piston deposit control that Delo® 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 lubricant provides.
Likewise, the valve train area stayed clean with no sludge. This same condition could be seen in other parts of the engine as well.
Piston

Cam Shaft
Excellent condition with no skidding or abrasive wear on the lobes – this cam shaft can be reused again in the bus engine based on its pristine condition.

“The oil sump – [shows] no sludge deposit yet, and it’s been a very long time,” Perez said of the 1.6 million kilometer engine. “The main bearing cap is still intact with minimal deposits, and our oil pump gears – still [show] no sludge.”
